Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind.
Tokyo has more than 300,000 restaurants. 150 Of them have been awarded at least one michelin star – more than any other city in the world – and Tsukiji market is where they source the seafood for which many of these restaurants are famous.
The market handles more than 400 different types of seafood from tiny sardines to 300kg tuna, from cheap seaweed to the most expensive caviar. Tsukiji handles over 2,000 metric tons of seafood per day. Around $20m dollars of fish and other foodstuffs are bought and sold at the market on trading days.
